Quimper, capital of Cornouaille
Médiaeval city situated on the river Odet at about 16 km from the coasts, Quimper is a charmful city full of distractions.
The Saint Corentin's cathedral
This superb cathedral built during the 13th century is a masterpiece of the gothic art in Brittany. Nevertheless, during its retauration in the 19th century, two arrows are built that tower over the two towers and the former city.
The former Quimper
In the former Quimper, 3 periods are differenciated, each has left tracks in the stone of the city.
First of all the primitive Quimper can be discovered around the church of Locmaria. This roman church of the 12th century is well known as the older roman church of the Finistere. it is a former priory with a beautiful mediaeval garden.
Then the city of the bishops reach around the cathedral from the 13th century. In the former bishop's palace you can now find the departemental breton museum. From this time the fortifications are still visible, but only 40 % of the original 1.5 km.
Finally, the Duke city : in the 16th century, a royal administration cam to embed in Quimper as harmonious private hotels attest, that we can still admire around the place "Terre au Duc".
Museums, visits and events
Quimper is a cultural town that shelters several museums amongst which the breton departemental museum is noteworthy and the faience museum or the "beaux arts" museum as well. You should especially focus on the "HB Henriot" earthenware factory. The faience is a speciality of Quimper from the 17th century. The earthenware factory of HB Henriot perpetuates the tradition of the handpainted faience. Guided visits are organized all year long from Monday to Friday.
Quimper is also a dynamic town that welcomes all kind of events. The greatest one is certainly the "Festival de Cornouaille" that takes place every year the 3rd week of July. More than 200 shows are consecrated to the breton culture.

The town center of Quimper is situated only 2 km from the campsite. A nice footpath will guide you to the banks of Quimper by the Locmaria's quarter, birthplace of the town and of the "faïencerie".
