The fishing ports's road
La Pointe de St Gilles :
viewing point: the view spreads
out on your left until the
point of Mousterlin, and on your right as far
as Loctudy.
The bridge of
Cornouaille : 610 m long. It overhangs the river Odet which is 30m
wide, offering a nice view of the ports of
Bénodet and Sainte Marine and of the estuary of the river.
LESCONIL then LE GUILVINEC :
This last is the 1st
French port of traditional fishing.
The Haliotika center permits you to discover
the fishing activity. At the end of the
afternoon (4.30 pm ) you can see all the boats
coming back, then the “criée” where
fish are sold to the highest bidder. To go
there, you have to book ! (leaflets are at your disposal in the reception)
PENMARCH :
This
name means “Horse head”. Penmarch was a prosperous port during the
15th
and 16th century, but it has been destroyed during the Ligue War
which opposed the Catholics and the Protestants… It commerce declined after the
discovery of the “Terre Neuve” fish.
The
Lighthouse of Eckmul was build in 1897. It rises at 65m and if you want you can
climb the 307 steps of the stairs.
The Saint Nonna’s church : built in
1508 in the gothic style …
The
square tower : It is the only remaining part of the St Guénolé’s church from
the 15th century.
SAINT GUENOLE :
There’s a permanent liveliness with the
boats, the “criée” which starts at 5.00 pm
PONT L’ABBE :
capital of the “ Pays Bigouden”, this town was
built during the 7th century by religious people. In the 12th they found a convent. Today you can still
visit its former chapel
of “Notre Dame des Carmes”.
The castle: from the 14th and 18th
century. You can visit its bigouden museum : scale models of boats and sailing
equipment illustrates marine ativities.
Nowadays, Pont l’Abbé keeps its traditional
activities such as embroidery and lace.
