The painters road
CONCARNEAU :
own which is joined to the school of
Pont-Aven a few years ago
The
fishing port : favorite subject of painters particularly the front of the
port between the sea-wall and the ramparts.
Museum
of fishing : opened all the year from 10am to 12.30am and from 2.30pm to
6pm (from 10am to 8pm during the season). It dates from 1961. You can see
sculptures, statues and several paintings of
Brittany.
The
door of Wines : the place where the ships used to ground in the old days,
offers the artists, especially Théophile Deyfolle, a great opportunity to make
beautiful paintings.
The
door of the Passage : illustrated by Lucien Gros (1845-1913), attracted by
the scenes of the port.
The
area of the Cross : observatory towards the closed town, the fishing port
or the quay of the cross and the chapel. You can find there Alfred Guillou
‘house where the painter has his studio.
The
Marinarium : square of the cross : visits from 8 to 12 am and from 3 to 5pm. It
is a big experimental aquarium maintained by the artist’s father Mr Guillou.
You can find there all sorts of fishes and crustaceans.
PONT-AVEN :
Creation of a painting school under the influence of Gauguin and indicating the beginning of
impressionism
The
museum : square of the townhall. Open from 10 to 12.30am and from 2 to 7pm.
It is dedicated to tempory exhibitions in order to make the painters of
Pont-Aven and of Brittany more well
know. A slide show explains how the school of Pont-Aven was born.
The
water mills : it was often depicted by the painters like “the Moulin David”
painted by Gauguin in 1984.

Bois d’Amour” : spinney where the painters of Pont-Aven liked to go :

“L’Incantation ou le Bois Sacré (1891) of Paul Sérusier
« Le Christ Jaune de Trémalo » : chapel of the XVIth century with a
Christ in wood in the interior of th XVIIth. It served of model to Gauguin for
its “yellow Christ”.
RIEC-SUR-BELON :
township situated between two
estuaries formed by the Aven and the Belon
Mélanie
Rouat receveid the artists in her hostel. Today, this house disappeared. The
painter Kousnetoff painted a lot of paintings of the Belon Valley.

MOELAN-SUR-MER
The russian Constantin Kousnetoff (1863-1936)
painted the landscapes of this coast where he liked to isolate himself.
QUIMPERLE :
The port : painted frequently by the painters.
Go round the High Town :
The
old houses Bremond d’Ars street : the actual exhibition room of the Presidial takes place in the
remains of the ancient hall which surmounted the tribunal curts of the royal
Sénéchaussée. In 1989, this room receveid the homage paid by the city to
Adolphe-Marie Beaufrère.
The
bloomed-bridge : it
spans l’Ellé. Its picturesque view has often been expressed by the painter Le
Sidaner.
The
Archer’s house : opened
from 10 to 12am and from 2 to 6pm in july and august.
Situated
in the Dom Morice Str., the ancient archer’s house collects all the historic
memories of the town. This street was painted by th “Quimperlois” Louis Noël
(it can be seen in the town hall).
ROSPORDEN :
Adolphe Leleux (1812-1891) invented the theme
of the Britain countryman in the 1840’s. He did a lot of investigations about
the costumes in Rosporden :
“Les Femmes de Rosporden”.
Pierre Loti stayed there a lot.
Maxime
Maufra painted the St-Eloi chapel, dating from the XVIth century. It was
dedicated to St Alar in a work of art called “Chemin de la chapelle de
Rosporden” (1898)
